Recreation

Not only Skagafjordur has magnificent landscapes but it also has its share of exciting activities both indoor and outdoor!

A great way to explore the fjord is going horseback riding. Only 4 km from our farm, at Lytingsstadir, you can take trips of any duration through the valley, and also make a stop at the Old Turf Farm to learn more about the Icelandic horse history.

Our intrepid visitors can have their dose of adrenaline by going river rafting on East-Jökulsá and West-Jökulsá! Two companies, Viking Rafting (tel. + 354 823 8300) and Bakkaflöt, offer river rafting only 7 km and 11 km from us.

Living up to Iceland’s reputation, Skagafjordur offers a great range of swimming pools and geothermal baths. Our very favorite include the pool at Varmahlid, the magnificent one at Hofsós, as well as the hottub Grettislaug, named after a popular Icelandic saga.

To immerse yourself even more into our sagas, you should join the Sturlung trail that takes you on the site of the bloodiest battle of the country history.

Not far from Sölvanes, you will also find many museums that take you on a journey into the region’s history. Among them are the Skagafjordur Heritage Museum at Glaumbær, Minjahúsið at Sauðárkrókur; the Transportation Museum and The Icelandic Emigration Centre at Hofsós.

If you are passionate of architecture and history, you should definitely consider a stop at the remarkable churches of the area. Most noteworthy are the oldest Icelandic Christian church Grafarkirkja (17th Century), and the turf church Viðimýrarkirkja (1834).
